They are also known as "Side Grain Wood Plugs". These are tapered wood plugs with the grain running across the top of the wood plugs from left to right. Face Grain Wood Plugs tend to absorb stain at the same rate as the surrounding wood for a less obtrusive finish (unlike traditional End Grain Wood Plugs which can turn darker when stained).
